This book is set in Sweden in the middle of the war. Sweden is neutral but in effect is occupied by Nazi Germany. The main character, Laura Dahlgren, is the chief assistant to Sweden’s chief diplomatic negotiator. She is very competent and keeps her head down to avoid attracting any undue attention – until her best friend is murdered. The rest is a gordian knot of intrigue. The novel discusses the Sami, an indigenous people, who I’d never heard of before this book. It does delve into the eugenics movement that was so prevalent in the late 1920’s and onward.
